Press Release: Skills reorganisations are a distraction from bid to raise standards

Commenting on remarks by the director-general of the British Chambers of Commerce, David Frost, that Britain’s youngsters’ lack of qualifications is a ‘national disgrace’ and the Government’s response has been to ‘endlessly play with structures’.

Shadow Innovation, Universities and Skills Secretary David Willetts said:

“David Frost is absolutely right. Instead of raising standards in education and increasing skills, the Government has offered us the distraction of endless reorganisations.

“The number of young people not in education, employment or training has risen to a million and a quarter. We urgently need to focus on real apprenticeships that employers value, and raising standards in our schools, so that people are able to fulfil their aspirations.”
