Press Release: Skills Scholarships for talented apprentices

David Willetts has announced plans to create bursaries for apprentices wanting to go to university.

The Shadow Innovation, Universities and Skills Secretary pledged to fund 1,200 new Skills Scholarships for apprentices going on to higher education, helping more people from non-traditional backgrounds study at university. David stressed,

“Let me be clear: while they are studying part-time and working part-time, they will have all their education costs covered.”

And he said, “This will create a robust, accessible vocational pathway to higher learning for the first time. By the end of a Parliament, over 5,000 people should have benefited.”

Many of the beneficiaries are likely to be in the STEM sector (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), providing a boost to the nation’s science base and British industry.
