Press Release: Imperial measures are part of our country’s traditions
Responding to the EU vote to keep imperial weights and measures indefinitely, Shadow Innovation, Universities and Skills Secretary David Willetts said:
“Conservatives believe in a Europe that reflects the diversity of our different nations. The pint, the mile and the pound are part of our country’s rich traditions and it’s great that they have now been protected from an absurd attempt by the EU to get rid of them.
“The Government has been feeble throughout, including allowing the acre to be abolished, so it’s a bit rich for them to claim the credit for something that has mainly been achieved by the hard work of British Conservative MEPs.”
