Press Release: Improve careers advice to widen participation
Responding to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report on widening participation in education, Shadow Innovation, Universities and Skills Secretary, David Willetts said:
“This report shows the Government has spent £400m in the last five years on widening participation and got very little for it. The Government’s policies for extending opportunity among young people have not been effective. Too many children, particularly from poorer backgrounds, are still missing out.
“Ministers need to focus on getting the basics right, like improving careers advice. Decisions made early on, like A-Level choices, can have a profound impact on later success. This Government’s dismantling of the school careers advice service has had a damaging effect on spreading opportunity. We’re committed to ensuring that once more every young student has access to independent careers advice so they can make informed choices about decisions that affect their future.”
