Press Release: Cut in university funding is a mess of ministers’ own making

Commenting on the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s funding announcement, Shadow Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, David Willetts, said:

“The cut in funding for some of our leading institutions is a mess of ministers’ own making. It is the wholly predictable result of their policy to spread money too thinly and it is a great pity that our world-class institutions like Imperial and the LSE have lost out, especially when we need them so badly at tough times like this.

“We want to see wider participation at university, but the Government has already spent hundreds of millions of pounds to no benefit. Only last week, the Public Accounts Committee savaged the Government’s record on broadening access to university. We need to widen participation through better schools and proper careers advice so that younger people understand the routes open to them.”
