Press Release: Labour are blocking path to University for A-level students

Responding to the publication of A-Level results today, Shadow Secretary of State for University and Skills David Willetts, said:

“I congratulate all those who have received their A-Level results. Their success reflects an enormous amount of hard work.

“It is tragic that ministers are now blocking the path to university for so many of them. The Government first reduced the number of university places, then offered only unfunded places and are now threatening to fine universities that over-recruit. They said they wanted half of all young people to go to university by 2010, but now they are blocking progress towards their own target.

“This must not happen again. There needs to be a better system, and that’s why we have been constantly calling for a student fees review.”

Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families Michael Gove added:

“I’d like to congratulate all those who have done so well today. As a country, we should always seek to recognise, and applaud, excellence in education. Thousands of teachers and young people have worked incredibly hard over the last two years and deserve the chance to celebrate their success.”
