Press Release: Response to NIACE’s ‘Learning Through Life’ report

In response to ‘Learning Through Life’, a new report from NIACE on lifelong learning, the Shadow Universities and Skills Secretary, David Willetts said

“This is an excellent report and my party will study it carefully because we do want to reverse the shocking decline in adult education - in just two years, 1.4 million places have disappeared.

“We need to be much better at giving people a second chance. Fixing the problems will be difficult, but we can rapidly improve the information and guidance on offer. And we must start to move towards an adult education system that is more responsive to learners and employers.

“Learner accounts must be right in principle and we propose lifelong learning accounts in our green paper. The challenge is, of course, financing them, especially in tough times like now. But we have identified £100 million currently going into Train to Gain which we will earmark for adult learning.”
