Press Release: Reaction to the Skills Strategy announced by Lord Mandelson
Commenting on the Skills Strategy announced by Lord Mandelson today, Shadow Universities Secretary David Willetts said:
“We welcome much of what is in the Skills Strategy but there are still some areas where the Government has fallen short.
“With youth unemployment rising to record levels, Ministers must be very careful about cutting the advice and support on which so many people depend. Skills Accounts and the Advancement Careers Service are both essential to helping learners get on the first rung on the ladder of opportunity which the Government claims to espouse.
“However, we are pleased that the Government has recognised the importance of our ideas such as Skills Scholarships and a greater recognition of the UCAS tariff for apprentices, which we announced at the 2008 Party Conference and in our own Skills Green Paper.”

Lord Mandelson launched the Government’s new National Skills Strategy on 11 November 2009.
