Better Schools and More Social Mobility

One of the most popular causes on which Conservatives unite and which appeals to many others is the free school movement.

I put this at the heart of the Conservative agenda in a speech in 2007 which shifted the party away from education vouchers towards making it easier to create new schools. I argued these could be a powerful tool for social mobility - which grammar schools were falling to deliver. The critique of grammar schools made the speech very controversial at the time but it did start a very successful agenda delivered with great energy by Michael Gove. The Government’s Schools Bill is a threat to these freedoms and now even universities face such threats.
